How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF
Page numbers make long documents easier to navigate, cite, and reference. If your PDF is missing them โ or you need to add them to a scanned document โ PDFMoves lets you add clean, customizable page numbers directly in your browser in just a few clicks.
When You Need to Add Page Numbers
- Scanned documents โ Scans don't include page numbers automatically
- Academic papers โ Thesis, dissertation, or research submissions that require numbered pages
- Legal documents โ Contracts and filings often require sequential numbering
- Printed booklets โ Making a professional-looking printable booklet
- Combined documents โ After merging multiple PDFs, adding unified page numbers
Step-by-Step: Adding Page Numbers
Step 1: Open the Page Numbers Tab
Visit pdfmoves.com and click the Page Numbers tab at the top.
Step 2: Upload Your PDF
Drag and drop your file, or click the drop zone to select it. PDFMoves will show the filename and total page count.
Step 3: Choose a Number Format
PDFMoves offers four common formats:
- -1- โ Dash style, clean and minimal
- ( 1 ) โ Parentheses, a more formal look
- 1 โ Plain number, the simplest option
- 1 / total โ Shows both current page and total (e.g., "5 / 20"), useful for ensuring no pages are missing
Step 4: Pick a Font Size
Choose from four sizes: Small, Medium (default), Large, or X-Large. Medium is usually the best choice โ it's readable without being distracting. Use Large or X-Large for documents meant to be read from a distance, like presentations or signage.
Step 5: Set a Start Number
By default, numbering starts at 1. You can change this if you want:
- Your document continues from another file (e.g., start at 17 if the previous file ended at 16)
- The first few pages are a cover or table of contents that shouldn't be counted
- You want to match physical page numbers in a printed book
Step 6: Click "Add Page Numbers"
Click the red button. PDFMoves will add numbers to the bottom-center of every page and download the result as yourfile_numbered.pdf.
Tips and Best Practices
Where are the numbers placed?
Page numbers are added to the bottom-center of each page with a small margin from the edge. This is the standard placement for most document types and works well with both portrait and landscape orientations.
Will it overwrite existing page numbers?
No. PDFMoves adds new numbers on top of the existing content without modifying the original document layout. If your PDF already has page numbers in the same spot, the new ones will appear alongside them. You may want to use the split tool to separate pages first if that's a problem.
Can I use Roman numerals?
Currently PDFMoves only supports Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...). If you need Roman numerals for front matter, you can split the document, add numbers to the main section, and then merge back with the un-numbered front matter.
Does it work with any page size?
Yes. Whether your PDF uses A4, US Letter, A3, or a custom size, PDFMoves automatically centers the numbers based on each page's actual width.
